We’ve all seen pictures online of living rooms that are so flawlessly composed that they don’t look entirely real: the perfectly watered medley of plants; the accumulation of worldly tchotchkes on the mantel or tasteful side-table; the sun streaming in from some vast window onto the blissful furniture. And inevitably, lying peacefully in the center of it all is an effortless area rug.

Of course, when you try to recreate this picturesque scene in your own living room, something feels off. Have the plants not been given enough water? Did you forget a tchotchke? Is there enough sun? If all of that stuff is good but something still doesn’t feel quite right, we’ve got an educated guess for you: it’s the area rug! This deceptively tricky design element actually takes a fair amount of effort to get right, but once you’re familiar with a couple of basic principles, the rug really will tie the whole room together.

Consider the Color

Have you ever heard of the 60-30-10 rule? This “rule” is really more of a loose guideline that interior designers use when they’re mapping out the color scheme for a room. The idea is that 60% of your room is in a primary color, 30% is in a secondary color, and 10% is an accent that draws attention and provides contrast.

While this rule can (and should!) be broken, when it comes to area rugs the idea of a 3-part color scheme can be incredibly useful for figuring out how to make the rug gel with the other elements in the room. For instance, the rug can reinforce your main color scheme (matching the walls or large pieces of furniture, for example), subtly introduce your secondary color, or become a focal point in the room by offering a bright pop that’s echoed in small belongings and hanging art.

Ponder the Pattern

This is where a lot of people get stuck. Color might be somewhat intuitive, but when it comes to pattern most people simply don’t have a frame of reference for what looks good.

Here’s our main suggestion: if you’re worried about the rug looking too busy, choose a rug with no pattern. Let the texture of the fibers do the work. You won’t regret it, and it can only help the room. But if you’re up for something more playful, why not announce your intentions with a bold print? Traditional Persian designs look great in most spaces, and black and white stripes are trending if you want a more modern look.
