Marble tile floor in Lexington bathroom

When it comes to tile flooring, marble is one of the most luxurious materials available. It’s stunningly beautiful and instantly adds class and a touch of elegance to your living space. Here at Floor Coverings International Lexington, we provide our customers with expert advice to help them find the perfect flooring for their needs. Read on as we discuss the different applications and considerations to keep in mind when deciding if marble tile flooring is right for your Lexington area home.

What Is Marble?

Marble is natural rock that is formed through the metamorphosis process of sedimentary rock such as limestone and dolomite. Marble is extracted from quarries in mountainous regions all over the world, with Italy, China, and India the largest producing countries. It is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, from pure white, to multi-color greens and pinks, to dark black.

Marble functions similarly to other types of natural stone tile and works well in areas exposed to moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. With the wide range of colors and patterns, you can be sure your floors will be truly unique. In bathrooms, marble tile is also a great option around sinks and in showers! When designing your space and tile layout, be sure to order extra tiles, as they can be difficult to match and hard to replace down the road if they are ever damaged.

The maintenance routine for marble tile is not that dissimilar to maintaining hardwood, and special attention should be given to avoid scratching its surface. It’s important to use a dust mop or soft cloth to regularly remove debris from your floors, and to avoid using vacuums with hard plastic or metal wheels and attachments that could cause scratching. Avoid allowing liquids to sit for too long on marble floors, which should be sealed regularly to prevent stains and discoloration.

Being a luxurious, natural stone, marble has a few special considerations to keep in mind. Compared to other types of tile, it is one of the more expensive options, and the larger the tile, the more expensive they become. It is also a softer variety of stone, making it susceptible to damage such as scratches and cracks. Special treatment is also required to prevent stains, and it’s important to avoid contact with acidic materials that may cause permanent damage. In wetter areas such as bathrooms, be sure to take extra precaution to prevent slippery floors.
